Cadillac and Lincoln recalling 70,000+ SUVs for screens going blank

Mark Twain said “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Today’s Cadillac Lyriq crossover SUV recall for blank display screens may give some auto enthusiasts Déjà vu. But even though it’s similar to the recent recall of 30,000 Lincoln Nautilus crossover SUVs for blank display screens, the two probably aren’t connected. Here are the models and years affected.
- 2024 Lincoln Nautilus SUVs
- 2023-24 Cadillac Lyriq SUVs
The 2024 Lincoln Nautilus recalled for blank screens
On June 3rd, Ford Motor Company announced a huge recall. It admitted there might be a problem with up to 30,600 Lincoln Nautilus SUVs causing their panoramic and center display screens to go suddenly blank.
Obviously, this is an issue that warrants an official NHTSA recall. For one, the problem would prevent your legally-required backup camera from working. But when the full panoramic display goes down, yo can’t see your speedometer or warnings such as a check engine light.
Ford is hoping to fix the problem with an over-the-air software update that it will be pushing out to vehicle owners for free. It promises to let owners know if their specific Nautilus is at risk by June 16th. This is officially Ford Motor Company recall 25C21.
The 2023-2024 Cadillac Lyriq recalled for blank screens
On June 6th, Cadillac jumped in with its own huge recall for crossovers with blank screens. This problem is only affecting the display directly in front of the driver. Like the Nautilus issue, it could cause the driver to lose their speedometer and warning lights.
General Motors says the recall will include 3,318 2023 Cadillac Lyriqs and 38,058 2024 Cadillac Lyriqs. That’s 41,376 total. The company is hopeful that the defect may only pop up in 3% of these vehicles. But it is still hoping to get ahead of the curve by pushing out a free software update to all these Lyriqs. This is GM Recall Number N25250068.
A pattern of screen failure?
So are the two recalls related? Probably not. I’ll start with the obvious: Lincoln’s Nautilus is made by Ford Motor Company in China. General Motors assembles the Cadillac Lyriq in Tennessee.
It’s plausible that Ford and Cadillac are buying screens from the same supplier. Like the infamous Takata Airbag recalls, this supplier might have messed up and thus both vehicles need to be recalled. That said, the fact that Cadillac’s recalling a driver display while Ford’s recalling a panoramic center screen makes it unlikely the two vehicles share a component. And if it was a shared hardware component failing, it’s unlikely either automaker would try other fix the problem with a software patch. But if this fix fails, we may learn more.
