Capricorn Eagles to face South Africa in tour ahead of World Cup Africa qualifiers

The national women’s cricket team, ‘Capricorn Eagles’ will host Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) development squad in a white-ball tour from 2 to 12 July.

The tour comprises four T20 matches and three 50-over fixtures will be played at the Oval in Windhoek.

Announced last week by Cricket Namibia in collaboration with CSA, this series will serve as direct preparation for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier. Notably, Namibia is set to host this significant qualifier right here in August.

According to Cricket Namibia, the upcoming Africa qualifier in August will see Namibia compete against seven other African nations, all vying for just two spots at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global qualifier.

“The CSA Emerging Academy tour provides the Capricorn Eagles with essential competitive match time and an opportunity to fine-tune their strategies across both T20 and 50-over formats,” Cricket Namibia stated, highlighting the strategic importance of the fixtures.

The tour also marks a significant chapter in the development pathway for South Africa’s up-and-coming cricketers. The CSA Emerging Women’s Academy continues to serve as a vital platform for bridging the gap between domestic and international cricket, nurturing the next generation of Proteas Women.

Grant van Velden, CSA Head of High Performance, underscored the importance of such cross-border engagements.

“These tours are crucial in providing our emerging players with consistent international exposure, which is essential for their transition to the senior level,” he said.

Meanwhile, Namibia Head Coach, Francois van der Merwe, said the Capricorn Eagles are excited to test their skill development in all departments of the game against a very strong South Africa Emerging Academy team.

“The series aims to gain important game time for the Capricorn Eagles ahead of the upcoming Africa T20 World Cup Qualifiers. I would like to see consistency in our execution with both bat and ball during the SA Emerging Academy series,” he concluded.
