Connecticut workers with autoimmune disease can get paid time off

Workers in Connecticut who are suffering from significant cases of autoimmune disease are eligible from paid time off from their jobs.

The Connecticut Paid Leave Authority issued a release on Thursday reminding workers, families and caregivers that paid leave can benefit those who live with an autoimmune disease.

An autoimmune disease results from an abnormal response to the adaptive immune system, as healthy and functioning parts of the body are mistakenly targeted as if they were foreign organisms.

According to CT Paid Leave, over 100 different autoimmune diseases have been discovered by medical professionals. Together, they impact more than 15 million people in the United States, which is 4.6% of the overall population.

Erin Choquette, CEO of the CT Paid Leave Authority, said that the CT Paid Leave program offers up to 12 weeks of income replacement for people with serious health conditions.

“Some autoimmune diseases meet that criteria,” Choquette said. “As chronic conditions, autoimmune diseases can cause debilitating flare-ups. Paid leave is there for individuals when these instances occur, as well as for treatment and maintenance of their condition.”

A recent Mayo Clinic study reports that females – who amount for 63% of people with autoimmune disease – are almost twice as likely as males to be diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

The top five diseases based on prevalence are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, type I diabetes, Graves’ disease and autoimmune thyroiditis.

No cures are available yet, but many treatment methods are in play to help control the immune system’s response and manage symptoms. These treatments include medications, exercises/physical therapy and blood transfusions.
