CSS Igbo-Etche wins NLNG 2025 science quiz competition

Port Harcourt — Community Secondary School, Igbo-Etche, has emerged winner of the 2025 NLNG Science Quiz Competition, defeating seven other top contenders in a fiercely competitive grand finale held in Port Harcourt.
The competition, themed “Renewable Energy Solutions,” brought together brilliant science students from across Rivers State, with CSS Igbo-Etche claiming the top spot in the Senior Secondary Class 2, SS2, category with 65,041 points, followed by Government Secondary School, GRA and Bonny National Grammar School clinching the second and third position with 63,982 and 55,359 points.
The school’s victory was marked by accuracy, speed, and a strong grasp of science concepts, particularly in clean energy,
after a rigorous three-phase contest comprising a championship round, a science project exhibition, and a grand finale..
In the Science Project Exhibition, Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School got the first position, having produced electrical circuit power from renewables; followed by Bonny National Grammar School with innovation for biogas and energy from food wastes; while Community Secondary School, Kira-Tai, clinched the third position for producing a solar stove.
For the Senior Secondary Class 1, SS1, category, the contest concluded at the championship stage, with Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana, securing first position. Niger Delta Science School, Rumuola and Government Secondary School, Abua, placed second and third respectively.
Other finalists in the SS2 category include, Government Secondary School, Eneka (4th); Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor (5th); Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt (6th); Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana (7th); and Government Secondary School, Abua (8th).
Speaking at the event, Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to science education and sustainability.
“The world is moving fast towards cleaner, greener energy. NLNG is proud to be leading this shift by exporting LNG, a cleaner fossil fuel, and supplying LPG to Nigerian homes. Through this quiz, we are not only investing in education but inspiring the scientists, engineers, and innovators of tomorrow.”
Horsfall added that the initiative has reached over 200 public schools since inception, creating platforms for young talents to thrive.
“Science is the heartbeat of progress. That’s why we support platforms like this, where young minds can discover their potential,” she said.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, represented by Tam Job Inisefiekabo, described the quiz theme as timely and critical.
“As the global community confronts climate change, environmental degradation, and energy insecurity, engaging our students in discussions and solutions around renewable energy is a step in the right direction,” she stated.
The NLNG Science Quiz Competition remains one of the company’s flagship educational interventions in Rivers State, aimed at promoting academic excellence and building capacity for Nigeria’s future energy leaders.
