Ex-President Yoon hit with travel ban in ongoing insurrection case

Prosecutors investigating former President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of insurrection and inciting foreign aggression have barred him from leaving the country, officials confirmed on June 25.
According to legal and law enforcement sources, the special counsel team leading the investigation formally requested the travel restriction from the Ministry of Justice after taking over the case from a joint task force composed of police and prosecutors. The measure is aimed at preventing Yoon, now a criminal defendant, from fleeing abroad while the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities in South Korea routinely issue temporary travel bans on suspects under investigation to mitigate flight risk. The bans are typically granted for one-month periods and may be extended. Courts may also request such measures when defendants are already on trial.
Yoon, who served as president until his impeachment late last year, was indicted in January on charges of leading an alleged plot to subvert the democratic order through the unlawful imposition of martial law.
