Some folks have been waiting for this day for years — for Alice Perkins, it’s been 99 years to be exact.

“It’s a dream come true to be here and enjoy ourselves with so many people,” said Perkins.

Perkins recently turned 99 years old and her lifelong birthday wish has been to see the Belmont Stakes and possibly even pick a winning horse. She said it was a dream she finally got to live out on Saturday — like so many others from across the country. In between the roaring cheers from the races, many guests also shared one other thing in common — fashion.

“I must have about 50 or 60 hats, a whole corner,” said Perkins.

“It brings a level of sophistication,” said Betsy Vitton, a visitor from Greenwich, Conn. “It brings a different context to this fabulous weekend and you know, we love the horses, we love the beauty and majesty of the animals and the jockeys.”

From dresses to pants, and from hats to fascinators, unique Belmont fashion lied everywhere you turn.

“I love seeing that, I love being a part of that and I really think that’s what keeps people at the race track all day,” said Christine A. Moore.

Based in NYC, Moore has been the featured Milliner of the Kentucky Derby for many years. Her hats can be seen on men and women at race tracks around the country. Moore said the fashion trends often change each year. For Belmont this year, she saw that more people were interested in wearing fascinators rather than hats. But once the main summer season hits, she anticipates that will change.

“Belmont, New York racing, is always a little bit more couture and sharper and less fru-fru and so I can really see that this year too,” said Moore. “Even when they’re choosing a hat, they’re choosing something a little more cleaner like a boater.”

Diane Griffin, who was visiting from Winchester Virginia agreed. She said she often goes to the Kentucky Derby and her outfit is much different.

“When we go to the Kentucky Derby and other places we do a lot of color, pinks, blues, bright colors, so I wanted to do something a little more sophisticated for the Belmont so we went with black and white,” said Griffin.

Other visitors like Marc Sims went with a more homemade style. His robe and pants were both made out of Crown Royal bags.

“I try to mimic the colors and Crown Royal has it,” said Sims. “She spends at least a couple months [making the outfit] its 190 bags, 100 for my robe and 90 for the pants.”

Each of the styles featured at Belmont shared a different piece of Saratoga history and culture, and also culture from across the country. There will be more races Sunday — which is the last day of the five-day racing festival. Stick with NEWS10 for updates.
