The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, demonstrated strong leadership upon his arrival at the Gateway International State Stadium Orientation Camp.

He arrived at 7 in the evening having visited the Oyo and Osun States orientation camps in Iseyin and Ede earlier in the day.

Without delay, he conducted an inspection tour of the facilities at the orientation camp and then addressed the enthusiastic corps members in the stadium’s main bowl.

Since assuming office, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu has overseen orientations in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, excluding Lagos. He plans to visit Lagos tomorrow, Friday, June 27, 2025.

He encouraged the corps members to integrate effectively and leverage the opportunity to gain quality knowledge and education to serve as tomorrow’s leaders, having moved to various parts of the country outside their places of birth and education.

He cautioned the corps members against travelling at night, emphasising that if a journey is imperative, it must be authorised.

Expressing excitement and appreciation for a stellar performance by the Man-O-War group, the DG urged corps members to see their one-year mandatory service not just as a civic duty, but as a unique chance to contribute meaningfully to national development.

While commenting on his observations of the camp facilities, the DG praised the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme workshop, describing it as well-equipped.

“Learn at least one skill. You are already familiar with SAED activities; take advantage of this opportunity to become independent and self-employed because NYSC is offering you a 2-in-1 opportunity. If you save 15 per cent of your allowance of N77,000, which totals N15,400, saving N15,000 for ten months will give you N150,000. By the time you complete your service, NYSC will pay you two allowances. After removing another N150,000, you will have saved N300,000,” he explained.

He also advised corps members to save any additional earnings offered by their employers at their Place of Primary Assignment.

“Previous corps members, who were paid N33,000 monthly, also managed to save. Be prudent in your spending and moderate in your lifestyles,” he added.

Earlier, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, the Ogun State Coordinator, briefed the DG about camp activities and the good conduct of the 2025 Batch A-Stream 2 Orientation Course.

“At the close of registration, a total of 2,602 corps members had registered, comprising 1,148 males and 1,454 females.

“I am pleased to report that the corps members have conducted themselves responsibly and have adapted well to the regimented camp life. All camp officials are diligently performing their duties with a high sense of synergy, ensuring a seamless orientation course thus far,” she reported.

She also commended the commitment of Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Local Government Chairman, and the host community for providing a conducive environment at the camp.

The highlight of the visit was the celebration of three corps members whose birthdays coincided with the visit.
