Tokyo stocks open higher after Trump announces Israel-Iran cease-fire
Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Tuesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel and Iran have agreed to a cease-fire.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 559.87 points, or 1.46 percent, from Monday to 38,913.96. The broader Topix index was up 31.89 points, or 1.15 percent, at 2,793.07.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by air transportation, electric appliance and securities house issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 145.89-91 yen compared with 146.08-18 yen in New York and 147.32-34 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1597-1600 and 169.20-24 yen against $1.1573-1583 and 169.20-30 yen in New York and $1.1498-1499 and 169.39-43 yen in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.
