Who won Belmont Stakes 2025? Full results and official finish order in 7.04 Saratoga spectacle

Sovereignty has won the 157th annual Belmont Stakes, earning $1.2 million in prize money.

With NFL icon Terry Bradshaw giving the "Riders Up!" command at the Saratoga Race Course, the 2025 Triple Crown has officially come to an end after Sovereignty won the 151st annual Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs , and Journalism raced to victory in the Preakness Stakes on May 17. Journalism has been the major favorite for all three races in the Triple Crown, but was outclassed by Sovereignty in the opening contest on May 3 and again on June 7.

Sovereignty's jockey, Junior Alvarado, was hit with a $62,000 fine and suspended for two races for using his whip eight times after Kentucky. Alvarado has since appealed the ruling despite exceeding the six-whip maximum, after filing a report with the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA).

"As everybody can see, it’s unfair the penalties we’re facing. Maybe (by appealing) we can get something good out of this," Alvarado said after his initial punishment. "I didn’t abuse the horse.

"Nobody can tell me, even if they can prove that I hit the horse two extra times, it was in an abusive way, it’s just ridiculous. The punishment doesn’t fit the crime and I don’t think there was any crime."

The ban was costly for Alvarado, as it saw him miss the Penn Mile Stakes, which boasts a prize pool of $400,000. However, he was back in action for the Belmont Stakes and won the race to earn himself another $120,000.

Sovereignty chose to skip the Preakness Stakes before lining up for the Belmont Stakes, while Journalism geared up for his third race in just five weeks. Although a Triple Crown winner didn't emerge this year, all three races in 2025 were thrilling in their own right, and Sovereignty won two of the clashes.

Prize money

The total purse was $2 million - lower than the $5 million purse on offer at the Kentucky Derby. However, unlike in the Kentucky Derby and at the Preakness Stakes – which also has a $2 million purse – the top eight horses in the Belmont Stakes receive a share of the money rather than the top five.

Each respective jockey takes home 10 percent of the winnings.
