"People are suffering, we're losing babies, we're losing mums: this is serious and we need to be taken seriously." Photographer Clare Hughes, who suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) during her pregnancy in 2017, is speaking at the launch of her Hidden Mothers exhibition featuring portraits by expectant women. Between one and three in 100 pregnancies are thought to be affected by HG, which can cause extreme pregnancy sickness, threaten the life of the foetus and require intravenous fluids in hospital to prevent dehydration. "I wanted use my creativity, my photography, to make sense of what had happened to me during pregnancy," Ms Hughes says. Ottumwa Regional Health Center launches wristband program to improve postpartum care

An Iowa hospital is working to improve postpartum care and reduce maternal mortality for new mothers through a new program. Ottumwa Regional Health Center says its Special Delivery Program prioritizes early intervention and raises awareness about what postpartum complications women can experience. These complications can occur days or even months after delivery, something the hospital says the program wants to change by empowering women to advocate for their health and alert doctors about recent deliveries. Before they leave the hospital, women will receive educational tools and a wristband that they wear for six weeks. According to the release, the wristband is a discreet visual cue to help healthcare providers identify postpartum patients and decrease the risk of misdiagnosis.
