EU delegation hosts garden party to celebrate Europe Day

The European Union Delegation in Pakistan yesterday hosted a lively garden reception to mark Europe Day, commemorating the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, which laid the foundation for what would eventually become the European Union.

The event, held in a warm and celebratory atmosphere, brought together diplomats, dignitaries, civil society representatives, and friends of the EU to honour the legacy of European integration-a peace-driven project that earned the EU the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012.

In welcoming the guests, the EU Ambassador Riina Kionka reflected on the historical context of the Schuman Declaration, which proposed the European Coal and Steel Community-an early step towards peace and cooperation in post-war Europe.

'The EU is fundamentally a peace project,' the host noted, referencing current global conflicts including Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine and turmoil in the Middle East and South Asia. 'It took another war on our soil to remind us of the old aphorism: if you want peace, prepare for war,' she said.

However, the evening's tone remained festive. 'Tonight is about celebrating Europe,' the host stressed, clarifying that the event was not a typical diplomatic reception. 'We're not a nation or a conventional intergovernmental organisation-but an entity of its own kind. At its core, the EU is a family of sovereign countries that have chosen to pool their sovereignty for greater strength and cooperation.'

In line with this unique spirit, the event featured no national anthems or long speeches. Instead, the ambience reflected a casual garden gathering with 27 EU flags proudly displayed, diverse European cuisine and drinks, and a DJ setting a celebratory mood. The occasion followed the EU's major 'EuroVillage' public event held earlier in the year.

The evening also had a sentimental note, as the host announced this would be their final Europe Day reception in Pakistan due to the end of their assignment. They extended heartfelt thanks to the team at the EU Delegation-Andre, Ahsan, Samar, Daniel, and Piotr-and the residence staff for their efforts in organising the reception.

Guests were encouraged to use the selfie booth, enjoy videos showcasing European unity, and celebrate cross-border friendship. 'Vive l'Europe!' the host declared, officially opening the buffet to the applause of guests.
