Oregon State stuns FSU baseball with late game comeback, walk-off in NCAA super regional
Oregon State's AJ Singer hit a 10th-inning walk-off single to beat Florida State baseball , who blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning against the Beavers in game one of the Corvallis super regional at Goss Stadium, to lose 5-4.
The Seminoles led 4-1 and had Oregon State down to its final out with one runner on in the bottom of the ninth, and seemed destined for a game one victory. However, Joe Charles issued a walk to Bryce Hubbard before a single from Dallas Macias loaded the bases.
After a wild pitch scored a runner from third base, Jacob Krieg hit a two-strike single that scored two runs and tied the game, forcing extra innings. Charles had not allowed a hit in his relief appearances in the College World Series going into the ninth inning.
FSU went down in order in the top of the tenth. The right-handed John Abraham replaced Charles on the mound in the bottom of the tenth and allowed a leadoff double to Aiva Arquette before a single from Gavin Turley put runners at the corners with no out.
An intentional walk loaded the bases, and after a quick out, Singer hit a single to win the game 5-4.
Joey Volini started for the Seminoles (41-15) and he threw 6.2 innings and struck out eight in a quality outing.
Oregon State's Dax Whitney dazzled with 10 strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched, but his high pitch count forced him out of the game early, crucially for FSU, as they had little success against him.
FSU scored three runs on two-out hits, with all three of those run scoring plays ending innings as the Seminoles ran into outs after baserunners crossed home plate. FSU went 6-of-13 at the plate with two outs, and Oregon State went 3-of-12, with two of those hits coming in the ninth inning.
Myles Bailey's sixth-inning blast put the Seminoles ahead 2-1. Max Williams hit a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning, and after Hunter Carns crossed home plate, M. Williams was caught off at first base and was thrown out to end the frame.
In the eighth inning, Brody DeLamielleure recorded a two-out RBI single to score Drew Faurot, and Chase Williams was thrown out trying to take third on the hit, but crucially, it came after Faurot crossed the plate to give FSU a 4-1 lead.
The lead would be undone by the four unanswered runs from Oregon State in the bottom of the ninth and tenth to stun FSU in game one of the super regional.
Game two is set for 9 p.m. at Goss Stadium on Saturday, June 9, and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
