Padres 2, Brewers 0: Chad Patrick spins another gem but the offense is nowhere to be found

Chad Patrick did all he could to give the Milwaukee Brewers their 10th win in 11 tries, both on the mound and walking off. It still wasn't enough.

Patrick continued his stellar rookie campaign with six innings of one-run ball, but the offense stranded double-digit runners on base against Randy Vásquez and the San Diego Padres staff in a 2-0 loss June 6 at American Family Field.

The Brewers 26-year-old right-hander completed six frames for the second start in a row after doing so only three times leading up to that, and with six strikeouts he reached that mark for the fifth time in his last seven outings. With a strikeout of Xander Bogaerts for the final out of the sixth, Patrick, with his ERA lowered to 2.84, raised his arms and called for the crowd to make noise to try and infuse some energy into the building.

BOX SCORE: Padres 2, Brewers 0

It didn't quite materialize. The Brewers squandered a string of scoring chances, ultimately stranding 10 on base with four separate innings with two men left on.

Offense falters...again

The Brewers kept putting men on base but couldn't deliver the big hit. They ran their tally of runners left on to 10 with two more in the seventh when William Contreras struck out against Padres left-hander Adrian Morejon.

The strikeout, which dropped Contreras to batting .180 against southpaws this year, sent the game to the eighth, where Manny Machado wasted little time making it a 2-0 Padres lead with a solo blast off Grant Anderson.

Chad Patrick delivers quality start

Another time taking the ball, another strong outing for Chad Patrick.

The rookie who keeps on delivering tossed six inning of one-run ball that featured six strikeouts, three walks and one attempt to fire up the crowd on his way off the mound. In a move displaying his manager's growing trust in his right-hander, Patrick stayed out for the sixth inning despite having the middle of the Padres order due up. With Rob Zastryzny warming to potentially face the two upcoming lefties, Patrick stayed in the game following a leadoff strikeout of Manny Machado. He worked around a two-out walk to Gavin Sheets by striking out Xander Bogaerts on a changeup, then called for the crowd to get loud as he walked off the mound for the evening.

Randy Vásquez keeps the Brewers off the board

He threw nearly half his pitches for balls and had to depart the game before completing the fifth inning, but Padres starter Randy Vásquez did his job of keeping Milwaukee at bay. Vásquez walked four and hitter another over 4 2/3 innings but didn't give up any runs, navigating around traffic in each inning but the third.

The Brewers put men on the corners against the right-hander in the second but Caleb Durbin bounced into a double play. Then in the fifth, they had two on with one out before Jackson Chourio flew out to the warning track in center and the Padres removed Vásquez. With the left-hander Wandy Peralta on in relief, Christian Yelich was rung up on a check swing by home plate umpire Edwin Moscoso, much to the chagrin of the Brewers designated hitter.

Padres small-ball their way to a lead

The Padres beat the Brewers at their own game to kick off the evening's scoring in the third.

It began with Tyler Wade bunting to lead off the inning, pushing the ball past Caleb Durbin, who was charging too hard, at third base. Martin Maldonado followed with a hit-and-run single through the hole in the right side to move Wade to third. After a foul pop out, Luis Arraez cued a soft single through the left side of the infield with two strikes to make it 1-0, San Diego, against Chad Patrick.
