Flood: Kano Govt flags off clearance of sensitive areas ahead of rainy season

As the rainy season approaches, the Kano State Government has launched a major flood prevention campaign with the flag-off of its annual drainage clearance exercise at the flood-prone Baban Gwari Roundabout in Kano metropolis. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, aims to mitigate the perennial threat of flooding in critical parts of the city. The exercise is part of the state's broader environmental management strategy to improve urban resilience and protect lives and infrastructure. Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Hashim Muhammad Dahiru, said the Baban Gwari Roundabout was deliberately chosen for its symbolic and practical significance. 'This location has over the years become a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of poor refuse disposal and blocked waterways,' he said. A massive clear up has commenced at The Appleby Horse Fair where 10,000 travellers gathered leaving rubbish and furniture in their wake. Thousands of pieces of litter are visible as well as plastic crates and cardboard boxes thrown across the site. Shocking images also show the remains of a white van that was engulfed by the flames of a fire on Saturday afternoon along with a tent and stall. The gathering is billed the biggest traditional gypsy fair in Europe and takes place in the town of Appleby in Cumbria every year. It comes as the blaze was captured on social media with huge crowds gathering to stare as smoke billowed across the fair that attracts thousands of gypsies from across Europe. In a video shared to YouTube , a fire could be seen burning through a white van which was set up in a corner of the field alongside a stall and several tables. Clouds of black smoke also surrounded a tent as fair goers watched on in horror. Some could be seen covering...

Phase two of Sherman park projects improving amenities and safety

Gambar
SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - The latest and largest park project approved by Sherman city council will bring changes to Old Settlers, Hawn, and Fairview Park. Sherman City Spokesperson Nate Strauch says the aftermath of phase one is in full swing, this is seen in the community’s presence at the new and improved Fairview Park. “Which has kind of, overnight, become one of the most popular playgrounds in the county,” said Strauch. Phase 2 of the $10 million dollar plan will bring pickleball courts to Old Settlers Park. “We’ve had a lot of success with the pickleball courts here at Fairview so to get something like that on the east side, we’re excited about that,” said Strauch. At Hawn Park, Strauch says Sherman city council member Henry Marroquin posed the idea to bring something new to Sherman but familiar to goalkeepers, forwards and defenders; a “futsal court.” This court is a smaller version of a soccer field played on a hard surface. Lastly, the biggest part of phase ...

City council hears from mediation center advocates

Gambar
It looks like just an ordinary building on Charles Page Boulevard, but inside are the extraordinary legal services provided by the Early Settlement Center for Mediation . "We settle lawsuits and try to help people prevent lawsuits through mediation and settlement conferences," said Director LeiLani Armstrong. They've been doing it for over 40 years. Powered by a small army of volunteer mediators their services are free of charge. What kinds of cases do they handle? "Real estate, we mediate neighborhood disputes, landlord/tenant issues, consumer merchant issues, family and divorce issues, we really run just about anything you can think of," she said. They're funded through the state, the county and the city of Tulsa. Last year the center mediated nearly 1,200 cases, saving litigants an estimated $12 million in legal fees and court costs. "We feel like we’re probably one of the most cost effective elements of...

Pride STL kicks off June events amid sponsorship changes

Gambar
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Pride STL started the month of June with a celebration of community and acceptance at a kickoff event Monday night. The event drew in a lively crowd for music and food, a preview of the annual event that brings more than 300 thousand people downtown for the parade and other festivities. But for many, this June has come with the weight of changing political tones, as well as many corporate sponsorship changes for pride events around the country. Pride STL announced earlier this year that Anheuser Busch and several other corporate sponsors had declined to renew their financial support of the event, leaving them with a $150 thousand funding shortfall for 2025. Jordan Braxton, an organizer with Pride STL, acknowledged the challenges of finding alternative funding sources for this year’s event. “Cancelling pride was not an option, even after we lost AB as one of our sponsors,” Braxton said. The Trump White House Administration has also ...

Sign up for our Newsletters "By having the freezer, we're seeing a variety of products that we didn't see before out of this space," director of Rutland Distribution Center Casey Thomas said. Additionally, the facility has an upgraded cooler powered by CO2 rather than refrigerant. Many refrigerants are ozone-depleting substances according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. With these improvements, in addition to a freezer, the distribution center is now able to store meat and dairy products. VT Food Banks works with roughly 300 organizations across the state. Now, those in Rutland and surrounding counties are able to receive those products, which would have otherwis...

LA VILLA, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — The La Villa school board voted to censure a trustee who was arrested and charged with DWI. A meeting was held Monday evening to discuss the recent DWI arrest involving Yesenia Morales. Morales was arrested on May 29 following an early morning crash in rural Hidalgo County. She allegedly crashed and struck two fences at a residence along the FM 491 and Mile 11 North intersection. According to a previous report , Morales performed poorly on a standard field sobriety test and refused to take a breath sample. “I refused the breathalyzer. That’s the reason I was taken in,” Morales stated during the meeting. “You are all assuming what happened. You are all taking action on something that you all don’t have proof of.” After the crash, Morales was taken to the emergency room, where a blood sample was taken and sent to a lab for analysis. The blood sample results have not been released. “I ask that you let what...
