Bike safety concerns spark debate

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Recent and tragic incidents of bicycle-related crashes is igniting conversation about whether bikes should be on the roadway.

But some are advocating for people to slow down and pay close attention, especially during the summer months

Everyone has an opinion on whether or not bikes should be allowed on the road, but what’s not up for debate is the fact that bikes can legally be on public roads.

At Wersell’s Bike and Ski Shop in Toledo, it’s one of their busiest times of the year.

“People are trying to get healthier, which is a good thing,” Jill Wersell, the owner, said.

Whether it’s for a hobby, exercise or getting to and from work, “a lot of people use it as their main mode of transportation,” Wersell said.

The longtime Toledo business owner said bicyclists should make sure their bikes are in good working condition before hitting the roadway.

“Obviously, that your wheels are true, your brakes are adjusted correctly for stopping ability, that the gears are working,” Wersell said. “You want to make sure that everything is tight, handlebars, stems, pedals, the whole thing.”

And she has advice for drivers.

“Motorists need to pay attention and be aware of cyclists that are out there on the road,” she said.

Wersell is also reminding drivers of Ohio laws.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation , bicycles can be on the road and must adhere to all traffic laws.

“Toledo is probably among the least bike-friendly cities in the United States,” Rick Baum, a Toledo cyclist, said.

Cyclists, like Baum, believe bicycling in Toledo is not ideal on public roads.

“I stick with the trails whenever possible,” he said.

According to OSHP, between 2020 and 2024, there were over 400 bike crashes in Lucas County.

Wersell says safety should be the top priority for motorists and bikers alike.

“Anything for visibility, whatever you got to do to make people see you and like I said the motorist have got to be aware too,” she added.

Wersell recommends wearing a helmet, although it’s not required by law. Riders should also ride with traffic.
