California high-speed rail project faces scrutiny amid funding and progress concerns

California voters approved Proposition 1A in 2008 to build a high-speed train.

The train was supposed to be ready by 2020.

But now, more than five years after that, no trains are running and no tracks have been laid.

A recent federal review looked closely at the project and found many problems.

This has made some lawmakers question whether the project should continue or if it is a waste of money.

Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo said,

“This project has wasted taxpayer money. It’s time to stop defending bad decisions.”

She believes the project won’t succeed, even in parts of the state like between Merced and Bakersfield.

She thinks money should go to other projects like roads and water systems.

Congressman Vince Fong agreed, saying,

“We should build things people really need, like roads, bridges, and wildfire management.”

But some people still support the project.

Congressman Jim Costa said these projects take time. He said,

“Other countries have high-speed rail because they invested in it. We need to do the same.”

The California High-Speed Rail Authority says it disagrees with the federal review. They say they have made good progress and want to finish the rail system.

Most of the project’s money about 82% comes from the state. Governor Gavin Newsom wants to spend $1 billion a year for the next 20 years to complete it.

The federal government has given the Authority 37 days to make a plan to fix problems. If not, they may stop federal funding. CEO Ian Choudri said,

“If funding is cut, we will change the plan and keep going.”

Choudri also said they are buying rail tracks this year and hope to start building next year. They are also looking for help from private companies.

Many people are now asking: Will this train ever start running?
