NSIB DG visit to Asky Airlines in Togo to deepen regional aviation safety ties

The Director General of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Captain Alex Badeh Jr, has paid a significant visit to Sky Airlines’ headquarters in Lomé, Togo, marking a crucial step in fostering regional cooperation and mutual alignment on aviation safety, investigative transparency, and technical training.

This high-level engagement underscores the importance of collaboration in ensuring the skies remain safe for all in West Africa.

During the meeting, Captain Badeh Jr and Sky Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer, Mr Esayas Woldemariam Hailu, discussed harmonising safety practices, establishing a framework for operational support, and collaborating on safety investigation procedures in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

The NSIB DG emphasised the regional responsibility of his agency and the need to engage with airline stakeholders to proactively enhance safety outcomes.

“We are moving away from a system where aviation rules are written in response to tragedy,” Captain Badeh Jr stated.

“Our focus is on building a framework grounded in science, data, and technology to stay ahead of threats. This shift enables us to detect risks before they escalate into incidents, spot trends before they become statistics, and prevent tomorrow’s accidents today.”

Mr Hailu welcomed the visit, affirming Sky Airlines’ commitment to advancing a culture of safety through strategic partnerships.

“At Sky Airlines, our priority is to meet and exceed safety standards. Collaboration with investigative authorities like the NSIB helps us remain responsive, transparent, and fully aligned with international best practices,” he noted.

Both leaders expressed optimism about opportunities for ongoing collaboration, including exchanging investigative insights, capacity-building initiatives, and establishing shared safety training programmes aimed at elevating the regional aviation framework.

This visit represents a forward-looking commitment to integrated safety systems, knowledge-sharing, and sustainable aviation oversight in West Africa.
