Rivers State to support enhanced maritime security

– Advocates tech-driven solutions

Port Harcourt – The Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies to strengthen maritime security, protect national assets, and boost economic growth through advanced technology.

The assurance was given by the State Administrator, His Excellency Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, during a courtesy visit by participants of the Nigerian Naval Warfare College (NNWC) Course 9 at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Embracing Technology for Safer Waters

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, Vice Admiral Ibas described the theme of the study tour, “Optimizing Technology for Effective Maritime Security Operations,” as timely, given the increasing sophistication of maritime threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling, and environmental hazards.

“The integration of modern technology—including satellite surveillance, AI-powered threat detection, and autonomous systems—is no longer optional but a necessity in securing our waters,” he stated. “Rivers State is ready to support all federal security agencies in deploying these innovations to safeguard our maritime domain.”

Rivers State: A Strategic Partner in National Security

The Administrator emphasized the state’s role as a key stakeholder in Nigeria’s maritime economy, pledging continued investment in infrastructure and security frameworks to enhance safety on land and at sea.

“We remain a willing partner in this endeavor and will sustain our support to ensure a secure and prosperous maritime environment,” he added.

Navy Highlights Rivers’ Economic Importance

In his remarks, the Commandant of the Nigerian Naval War College, Rear Admiral Akinola Olatunde Olodude, noted that Rivers State was chosen for the study tour due to its critical contributions to Nigeria’s economy.

“With 30% of Nigeria’s coastline (853km), over 40% of the nation’s crude oil output, and 33% of its GDP, Rivers State is undeniably vital to our maritime security and economic stability,” Rear Admiral Olodude said.

He explained that the NNWC was established to develop operational leaders capable of tackling modern security challenges and that the study tour was designed to expose participants to real-world security dynamics.

Moving Beyond Traditional Security Approaches

The Commandant stressed the need for Nigeria to transition from conventional maritime security methods to tech-driven strategies, particularly in Rivers State, where oil installations and shipping activities face persistent threats.

“Optimizing technology is no longer an option but a requirement for effective maritime operations in today’s complex security landscape,” he asserted.

A Call for Collaborative Action

Both leaders agreed that sustained collaboration between the state and security agencies is essential to combating maritime crimes and ensuring economic stability. The study tour is expected to yield actionable insights that will shape Nigeria’s maritime security policies.

As Nigeria intensifies efforts to secure its waters, Rivers State has positioned itself as a proactive partner in driving innovation and operational efficiency in maritime security. The engagement with the Nigerian Naval War College underscores the shared commitment to leveraging technology for a safer and more prosperous maritime sector.
