Inside Abuja-Kaduna toilet mess: Opeifa launches shock inspection
Amid growing public concerns about poor onboard hygiene and non-functional toilets on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, on Thursday, embarked on an unscheduled inspection of the Idu Railway Station in Abuja.
The visit followed the circulation of a media report alleging that all toilets aboard the AKTS were in disrepair, sparking backlash from passengers and commuters.
Determined to personally verify the claims, Opeifa boarded the train and conducted a coach-by-coach inspection, examining the toilets and other onboard facilities.
He was accompanied by senior NRC officials and technical staff who provided updates on the current state of amenities, ongoing maintenance work, and plans for further upgrades.
Addressing journalists during the inspection, Opeifa stressed the Corporation’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and service excellence.
“We take all feedback seriously—whether from the media or passengers—and we are committed to transparency and continual improvement. Our visit today is part of our resolve to ensure that passengers receive the highest standard of service,” he said.
He commended the AKTS operations team and cleaning contractors for the noticeable progress achieved in recent months, adding that while most of the toilets are now functional, some areas still require attention.
Encouraging passengers to use the available complaint channels, Opeifa urged them to play an active role in the Corporation’s revitalisation drive by reporting concerns for timely resolution.
He also charged NRC staff to adopt a more customer-centric approach, noting that a positive attitude and responsive service are crucial to achieving a world-class railway experience.
“The Corporation remains committed to improving customer service delivery and enhancing overall passenger experience,” he stated.
The NRC assured the public that any outstanding faults would be addressed promptly and reiterated its call for continued constructive feedback to support its goal of building a modern, reliable, and safe railway system.
