Navy fights back: Boko Haram retreats after bloody two-hour clash at Lake Chad
In the early hours of Wednesday, Nigerian military forces successfully repelled an attempted infiltration by Boko Haram insurgents on the Naval Base at Lake Chad, in the Fish Dam area of Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State.
According to military intelligence sources, the terrorists stormed the base at approximately 1:00 a.m., targeting newly procured Swamp Boggeys, specialised amphibious vehicles recently acquired by the Borno State Government to support waterway clearance operations across the Lake Chad region.
The daring assault was met with fierce resistance from naval personnel, sparking a prolonged gun battle that lasted over two hours. Reinforcements from nearby Baga were swiftly deployed, forcing the attackers to retreat under heavy fire.
“The base stood firm and repelled the incursion,” a security source revealed. “While there was some damage, an ambulance and two vehicles destroyed, our Swamp Boggeys remained untouched, and the facility stayed secure.”
Zagazola Makama quoted sources as saying that several personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation, but no loss of life was confirmed as of press time.
In response to the retreating militants, the Air Component Command (ACC) launched a pursuit operation, deploying surveillance and strike assets along the Lake Chad waterways to locate and neutralise the fleeing insurgents.
