Rania Brown, Avon, Senior — Discus (D-I)
Before heading to the University of Cincinnati, Brown closed out her high school career by successfully defending her state championship.
Brown stood atop the podium once again on Saturday when she threw 153 feet, 4 inches.
“I’ve been having a rough season recently with sticking in the 140s, and I wanted to prove to everybody that I wasn’t a one-trick pony,” Brown said, “and I was going to show them from the beginning, I guess.”
Brown’s initial throw of 151-10 was good enough to win on its own. But on her fifth throw, Brown bettered her first throw for her final mark of 153-4.
“We had went over a little thing right in between both flights. I felt good during my warmups. I was ready. I went in and I just applied my corrections, and I got to where I needed to be,” Brown said.
Her 151-10 distance on her first throw tied the winning mark she achieved when she won her first state title in Dayton in 2024.
Beachwood — 4x200 relay (D-II)
The quartet of freshman K’Dyn Harris-Tate, sophomore Marley Readance, freshman Meena Abdul-Basser and freshman Kyrsten Ginn, the granddaughter of legendary Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr., improved upon their top Division II semifinal time to win the final on Saturday (1 minute, 39.4 seconds). Their time on Friday was 1:39.82.
Despite having just run the 100 meters earlier and placing eighth, Ginn found the energy on the anchor leg to get her team atop the podium.
“I was tired. I was feeling lightheaded. But that’s what we do in practice,” she said. “We just repeat, repeat, repeat. So I was just trying to get myself back together to be able to compete for my team.
“All my legs were amazing, but my third leg, she gets me in a really good position every single time.”
Ginn came back later and took eighth in the 200, giving her three podium spots.
Abdul-Basser also earned an individual medal, finishing third in the 400 (56.02).
Hathaway Brown — 4x100 (D-II)
The Blazers’ 4x100 relay, anchored by a strong close from Jane Kennedy, edged out Beachwood to take first (48.10) on their way to the first team state title in program history .
Isabelle Seelbach, who placed seventh in the 300 hurdles, Chloe Battle and Aaris Minter joined Kennedy in the winning relay.
Ariannah Floyd, Firelands, Senior — 300 hurdles (D-II)
A year after battling through a stress fracture to place fourth in the 300 hurdles at state, Floyd finished out her high school career as a champion in Columbus on Saturday.
Floyd won with a time of 42.76 to win in the 300 hurdles, edging out CVCA’s Joelle Cherry (43.86).
“I felt like I took advantage on the middle of the curve, caught that stagger,” Floyd said. “I didn’t really come out of my blocks strong enough to catch the stagger right away. But once I caught the stagger in the middle of the curve, I felt like I had it then.”
Floyd also earned a podium spot in the 100 hurdles, finishing seventh (15.01).
Emily Mechenbier, Perry, Freshman — Shot put (D-II)
Mechenbier admitted there were some nerves for her initial throws in her first time at the state meet. But the distances she achieved on those throws didn’t show any nerves.
Mechenbier won the shot put in Division II with a best throw of 45-6.50.
“That was my goal coming in. I wanted to push the mark and get there. So it kind of feels unreal,” Mechenbier said. “After I started getting it out there, they went away, and I was kind of calming down a bit.”
Her first throw (43-5.5) was good enough to win on its own. But she improved on her mark by more than two feet on her next throw.
“I think I realized on the reverse that it was a better finish than normal. I knew it would be a little bit farther, but I didn’t know how much farther,” Mechenbier said.
Mechenbier added another throw beyond 45 feet when she recorded 45-2 on her fourth attempt.
Oberlin — 4x200 and 4x100 relays (D-III)
The Phoenix swept the two sprint relays on their way to winning the team runner-up in Division III . The quartet of Alyssa Webb, Aubrey Abeyta, Jasmine McDearmon and Olivia Hudson won the 4x200 (1:42.25), with Hudson providing a strong closing burst on the anchor.
In the 4x100, Cayman Noble joined Webb, McDearmon and Abeyta to edge out Columbus Grove for first (49.24), securing Oberlin’s second gold medal of the morning.
