Tennessee baseball silenced by Arkansas, Zach Root in NCAA super regional Game 1 loss

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Tennessee baseball had one hit in eight innings and now is one loss away from ending its season short of the College World Series.
The Vols faltered, falling 4-3 to Arkansas in the opener of the Fayetteville Super Regional on June 7 with their quietest offensive performance this season. Arkansas starter Zach Root was the source of frustration, stymying the Vols for seven one-hit innings as UT had its fewest hits (two) in a game this year.
Tennessee (46-18) and Arkansas (47-13) play Game 2 of the super regional on June 8 (3 p.m. ET, ESPN). Arkansas clinches a trip to the CWS with a win, while the Vols have to win to force a decisive Game 3 on June 9.
Andrew Fischer pulled Tennessee within 4-3 with a solo homer in the ninth inning.
Tennessee baseball could not solve Arkansas starter Zach Root
Dean Curley smoked a ball to left center in the fifth inning that snuck over the wall for a two-run homer and Tennessee's first hit.
Root shut down the Vols, who did not have a base runner until Dalton Bargo reached on an error to lead off the fifth. Curley homered in the next at-bat.
Root allowed two runs on one hit and two walks in seven innings. He struck out six.
Tensions bubbled in the sixth inning between Vols, Razorbacks
Fischer grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the top of the sixth as tensions boiled over between the teams.
Root yelled, pointed and flexed at Fischer after the double play. Vols coach Tony Vitello, third-base coach Josh Elander and staffer Luke Bonfield were frustrated by the umpires taking no action. The umpires convened and issued warnings to both dugouts.
Fischer and Root also had a tense moment in the fourth inning. Fischer spat at home plate and nodded at the Arkansas crowd during his fourth-inning at-bat. Root struck him out with a 98 mph fastball and waved Fischer off the field and yelled at him.
Marcus Phillips pitched around trouble to keep Tennessee close
Marcus Phillips didn't have a clean inning but avoided major trouble to keep the Vols close. The starter allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks in 5⅓ innings. He struck out five.
Phillips escaped a two-on, one-out situation with a double play in the first inning. He did it again in the third when he got Cam Kozeal to ground into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
Arkansas catcher Ryder Helfrick snuck a two-run homer over the wall in left field in the fifth for a 3-2 Arkansas lead after Curley put UT ahead 2-1 in the top half of the inning.
