TPD: Driver taken into custody after blocking traffic, telling officers there was 'an explosive device' in the car

Part of Dale Mabry Hwy in Tampa was shut down Thursday evening after police say a driver claimed to have "an explosive device" in the car.

Just after 6:30 p.m., officers with the Tampa Police Department responded to reports of an unconscious driver behind the wheel that was blocking traffic on the southbound lanes of Dale Mabry Hwy and Columbus Drive.

After arriving, TPD said the driver did not comply with officers' commands and claimed there was explosive device in the car.

In an abundance of caution, police say they shut down southbound traffic on the highway between Columbus Drive and Tampa Bay Boulevard.

As of 8:00 p.m., traffic remains shut down, but authorities say it is expected to be open soon.

No officers were injured. Police say the suspect was taken into custody.

An investigation is ongoing.
