Wydad coach Benhachem: Lessons learned Despite Club World Cup elimination

Despite a significant 4-1 defeat to Italian giants Juventus, Wydad Casablanca coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem affirmed that his team gained crucial insights from the FIFA Club World Cup match. He stated that the outlines of next season’s squad are becoming clearer, and early exposure to such high-level competition will benefit the team in the future.

Benhachem noted that despite the loss, there are “positive points to build on.” He explained, “We are starting to discover the features of the team we will compete with domestically and continentally next season, and the identity of the players we can rely on is gradually forming.”

The coach emphasized the importance of competing at this elite level early on. “At this level, there is no room for losing focus even for a moment, and no room for naive mistakes. Players must understand this well… We must not make it easy for the opponent to score goals,” he said during the post-match press conference.

Both Wydad and Al Ain have been eliminated from the FIFA Club World Cup. Wydad lost 4-1 to Juventus, while Manchester City secured a dominant 6-0 victory over Al Ain. With both teams now out of contention for the Round of 16, Wydad’s focus shifts to their final group stage match against Al Ain next Thursday.

Despite this game being “formal” in terms of qualification, Coach Benhachem stressed the importance of ending the tournament honorably. He confirmed that the team will not rotate players and will field its main lineup.

“We must win and leave the competition with three points that preserve the team’s dignity and reflect a true image of the players’ capabilities,” he stated, aiming for a strong conclusion to their Club World Cup journey.
