Inside Abuja-Kaduna toilet mess: Opeifa launches shock inspection

Amid growing public concerns about poor onboard hygiene and non-functional toilets on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, on Thursday, embarked on an unscheduled inspection of the Idu Railway Station in Abuja. The visit followed the circulation of a media report alleging that all toilets aboard the AKTS were in disrepair, sparking backlash from passengers and commuters. Determined to personally verify the claims, Opeifa boarded the train and conducted a coach-by-coach inspection, examining the toilets and other onboard facilities. California voters approved Proposition 1A in 2008 to build a high-speed train. The train was supposed to be ready by 2020. But now, more than five years after that, no trains are running and no tracks have been laid. A recent federal review looked closely at the project and found many problems. This has made some lawmakers question whether the project should continue or if it is a waste of money. Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo said, “This project has wasted taxpayer money. It’s time to stop defending bad decisions.” She believes the project won’t succeed, even in parts of the state like between Merced and Bakersfield.
