'I'm bringing women's stories out of the darkness'

Gambar
"People are suffering, we're losing babies, we're losing mums: this is serious and we need to be taken seriously." Photographer Clare Hughes, who suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) during her pregnancy in 2017, is speaking at the launch of her Hidden Mothers exhibition featuring portraits by expectant women. Between one and three in 100 pregnancies are thought to be affected by HG, which can cause extreme pregnancy sickness, threaten the life of the foetus and require intravenous fluids in hospital to prevent dehydration. "I wanted use my creativity, my photography, to make sense of what had happened to me during pregnancy," Ms Hughes says. "I couldn't really find any information," she said of the condition, which can lead to some mothers being sick up to 50 times a day throughout their pregnancies. "The project has been a really cathartic experience - I've met so many other women who have gone through t...

Persons with albinism at increased risk of skin cancer amidst cream delays

Challenges such as delays in receiving protective creams and the lack of accessible screening services, were on June 13 highlighted by people with albinism in Rwanda. The concerns were raised during the International Albinism Awareness Day marked under the theme “Demanding our rights: Protect our skin, preserve our lives”. ALSO READ: Albinism Awareness Day: Tracing progress of people living with albinism in Rwanda Dieudonné Akimaniduhaye, the president of the Organisation for the Integration and Promotion of People with Albinism (OIPPA), said delays in distributing sun-protection creams and the absence of regular skin screenings are exposing people with albinism to life-threatening conditions. “Around three months ago, these creams were distributed through district pharmacies. Now, some of them are supplied via Zipline, but many health centre staff are unaware of this change. We urge the government to inform health facility managers accordingly,” he said. “Every week, I receive at le...

When the mind splits: Understanding dissociative disorders

I rarely watch movies, but during the recent long holiday, I finally sat down to see one. It wasn’t the most popular title, but the story caught my attention because it portrayed a character living with what was supposed to be a dissociative disorder. But almost everything about that portrayal was wrong. I had seen this kind of misrepresentation in one or two other films before now, and I remember thinking to myself, “One day, I’ll write about this.” So when our last series ended, I knew it was time. Dissociative disorders are not as widely talked about as depression or other mental health conditions yet they affect people in real ways. They can show up at any age but often begin in childhood, especially in children who’ve gone through trauma, abuse, or severe emotional neglect. Sometimes, the signs show up early, but no one really connects the dots. You may see a child who often “zones out” or seems like they’re in their own world, and people just call them quiet or imaginative. ...

California bill would allow slavery legacy to be factor in college admissions

Affirmative action for racial minorities seeking admission to college has been barred by California’s voters and, more broadly, by the U.S. Supreme Court. But legislation approved by the state Assembly seeks to find a way around those restrictions by allowing the schools to give preference to descendants of slavery in the United States. “This bill is not about race. It’s about relationship to a legacy of harm,” Assembly Member Isaac Bryan, D-Los Angeles, said Wednesday, a day after his bill, AB7, won Assembly passage on a party-line vote of 54-17. It now heads to the state Senate, and Bryan said he was optimistic that the measure would become law. But the Pacific Legal Foundation, a conservative nonprofit, said AB7 was aimed at restoring preferential treatment based on an applicant’s race, despite its slavery-descendant language. “The idea that either (California’s) Proposition 209 or the (U.S. Constitution’s) Equal Protection Clause would countenance intentional discrimina...

Pride STL kicks off June events amid sponsorship changes

Gambar
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Pride STL started the month of June with a celebration of community and acceptance at a kickoff event Monday night. The event drew in a lively crowd for music and food, a preview of the annual event that brings more than 300 thousand people downtown for the parade and other festivities. But for many, this June has come with the weight of changing political tones, as well as many corporate sponsorship changes for pride events around the country. Pride STL announced earlier this year that Anheuser Busch and several other corporate sponsors had declined to renew their financial support of the event, leaving them with a $150 thousand funding shortfall for 2025. Jordan Braxton, an organizer with Pride STL, acknowledged the challenges of finding alternative funding sources for this year’s event. “Cancelling pride was not an option, even after we lost AB as one of our sponsors,” Braxton said. The Trump White House Administration has also ...
